If you’re like most New Yorkers, you’ve probably skipped town for the weekend and are enjoying a mini-vacation out in the fresh air. Whether you’re swimming, hiking, sailing, or just kicking back with a beer at a barbecue, you don’t want to spoil your fun by ignoring your body. Here are 5 of Physio’s tips for a happy and healthy Memorial Day.
1. Be Active
It’s tough to break away from your routine, especially if you’re like most of the world and hit the gym on the way to or from the office. But just because you have the day off doesn’t mean your structure has to totally crumble! Even if you can only fit in a 30 minute jog, a quick dip in the lake, or a game of frisbee, keep in mind that something is better than nothing.
2. Eat Well
Cookouts can be nightmares for the nutritionally-aware, so if you fear finding yourself in a situation with zero healthy foods, bring your own! Raw veggies and dip, summery salads, and fresh fruit are our favorite yummy go-to snacks. If you want to indulge, think about moderation. Do you really need a second hot dog? Overdoing it on junk food won’t only pack on calories, but will also make you feel heavy and lethargic in the hot sun.
3. Drink Water
Always stay hydrated. Sounds easy, but it can be so easy to ignore this basic need when you’re running around, but being out in the elements tends to drain you much more quickly, especially if you work up a sweat. Keep a water bottle with you at all times, and remember to sip often even if you don’t feel thirsty.
4. Use Sunscreen
The sun is so tempting, especially after sitting in an office 5 days a week. Enjoy your time soaking up rays, but be smart about it. Always wear sunscreen and sunglasses, and if you’re really sensitive, a wide-brimmed hat will add extra protection. The sun is at its strongest between 10 am and 4 pm, so make sure you seek out a spot in the shade as a retreat when it gets too hot.
5. Relax
Remember, you’re on vacation! Not every minute needs to be action-packed. During the day, make sure to pace yourself…and yes, that includes your alcohol consumption! When you get back to the city, try to get 8-10 hours of sleep so you wake up Tuesday morning for work feeling refreshed.
