Shawn Monahan, PT, DPT

Shawn joined the Physiofitness team in 2012 after graduating with honors from SUNY Upstate Medical with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy.  His profound passion for correct movement helps his clients achieve the highest levels of function and performance.  Shawn’s clinical approach adheres to the philosophy that it is essential to improve the quality of your movement before attempting to maximize the quantity of your movement.  He has extensive post-graduate education in movement assessment and osteopathic manual therapy and holds multiple certifications, including the Selective Functional Movement Assessment™, the Functional Movement Screen™, and Full Body Active Release Techniques®. He was also recently certified as a StrongFirst Level 1 Kettlebell Instructor.

Shawn’s expertise in the field of exercise prescription led to his promotion at Physiofitness to Personal Trainer Supervisor in 2013.   In addition to treating clients, Shawn is responsible for educating the trainers on the most up-to-date methods for optimizing function and improving performance.  He regularly hosts educational seminars for several health and fitness professionals in New York on how to properly analyze the biomechanics of strength conditioning to restore pain-free function and enhance athletic performance.  He also conducts movement screens for asymptomatic athletes and individuals that help to identify risk factors for injury.

Shawn graduated Magna Cum Laude from Syracuse University with a bachelor’s degree in Health and Exercise Science. During his undergraduate studies, Shawn played four years of Division I rugby. As a graduate student, he served as the trainer for Syracuse University’s rugby team. He also has over six years of experience as a certified personal trainer for the National Council on Strength and Fitness (NCSF). Shawn is currently both Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Precision Nutrition certifications.   In his free time, Shawn enjoys weight lifting and hiking outdoors.
